Trăim în România și tot mai des auzim în media că tinerii din ziua de azi nu mai pun preț pe educația gratuită oferită de stat. Dacă tot mai puțini termină liceul și mai puțini optează să urmeze cursurile unei facultăți. Și totuși, este facultatea un trend, necesitate sau moft?
We often hear in Romania's media that today's young people do not value the free education provided by the state. If fewer finish high school even fewer choose to attend a BA. And yet, is college a trend, necessity or fad?
Cât timp mai trăiesc persoanele care și-au format o educație pe perioada comunistă vom auzi adresată copiilor, odată cu terminarea liceului, întrebarea: "La ce facultate vrei să dai?" Și copilul de 19 ani care abia aștepta să termine în sfârșit cu examenele și îndoparea de cunoștințe din toate domeniile devine panicat pentru că nu știe încotro să se îndrepte. Pentru cei care încă nu au ales o carieră concretă în viață, drumul le este indicat cu vehemență de către părinți, care așa cum spune o vorbă din bătrâni, știu ce e mai bine pentru copilul lor. Astfel tinerii ajung pe băncile unor facultăți și asistă la niște cursuri dintr-o datorie față de părinții lor. Asta în cazul în care chiar vor merge la acele cursuri.
As long as people who have been educated during the Communist period are still alive, they will ask their children, when they finish high school, the question: "What kind of college do you choose?" And the 19-year-old child who was eagerly waiting to finish the exams and the intensive practice in all areas of education becomes panicked because he does not know what to do. For those who have not yet chosen a career in life, the road is vehemently chosen by their parents, who, as an old Romanian saying say, know best what is good for their child. So the young people get to the faculty and attend classes as a duty to their parents. And that's even if they'll go to those classes.
So what is the purpose of college? In our parents and grandparents days to graduate college was a reason of great pride because the opportunities for professional development were much higher. Today young people with two diplomas are at home for various reasons. Stay and ask yourself: Why did they do those studies if they do not help them? What's wrong? Are the accumulated knowledge in the amphitheaters no longer relevant? Is the labor market too saturated by over-qualified people for the jobs that are available? Are young people choosing colleges just for the sake of having a diploma hanging on the wall?
Pentru a răspunde la aceste întrebări mă voi folosi de propria mea experiență și voi spune că nu sistemul de învățământ de la noi este de vină (deși nu ne mândrim prea tare nici cu el) ci perioada în care tinerii se decid să urmeze o facultate. Ce poți să știi despre viață la 19 ani? De unde să știi la ce ești bun când în liceu ai făcut câte un pic din toate? Când ajungi pe băncile facultății la 30 de ani știi de ce ești acolo. Alegi cu mintea și nu cu sufletul. Eu nu pot să spun că am ales o facultate anume pentru că aveam nevoie de diplomă ci pentru că am vrut să fac ceva cu timpul pe care îl aveam. Nici diploma nu mă va ajuta foarte mult într-o carieră de succes, dar cunoștințele dobândite nu mi le va lua nimeni, iar timpul petrecut în sălile de curs m-a ajutat să văd totul cu alți ochi, să înțeleg mai bine oamenii din jur și lumea în care trăim. În concluzie, facultatea m-a ajutat să mă dezvolt ca persoană, să îmi descopăr calitățile și limitele.
To answer these questions, I will use my own experience and I will say that it is not our education system that is to blame (although we are not proud of it either) but the time period when young people decide to go to college. What can you possibly know about life at age 19? How do you know what you're good at when you've made a little bit of everything in high school? When you get to college at age 30 you know why you're there. You chose with your mind and not with your soul. I can not say that I chose a college because I needed a diploma but because I wanted to do something with my time. Nor will the diploma help me a lot in a successful career, but the knowledge I have acquired will not be taken by anyone, and the time spent in the classrooms helped me to see everything differently, to better understand the world where we live in. In conclusion, college helped me develop as a person, to discover my qualities and limits.
Facultatea din punctul meu de vedere este o etapă din viață care trebuie trăită când știi ce vrei de la viață și nu când abia te formezi ca și om. Poate într-o zi omenirea va avea o revelație și va lucra și la acest aspect. Până atunci nu vă mai trimiteți copii la facultate doar ca să vă simțiți voi mândrii de ei pentru că mai important este un om realizat sufletește decât un om cu hârtii înrămate pe peretele din casa părintească.
College, from my point of view, is a stage in life that must be experienced when you know what you want from it, and not when you are just grasping adulthood. Maybe someday people will have a revelation and will work on this too. Until then, do not send any children to college just to make you feel proud of them because the more important thing in life is the soul search and discovery as a person not a paper framed on the wall of your parent's house.
